Six and a half years actually. A lot has changed since then. A lot has stayed the same. We've added another baby (this time a girl!) and changed careers and moved states. And somewhere in all this time I feel like I've lost myself. I guess five kids, work and life in general can do that to you. So, I've come here. To see if I can find myself again. I don't mean that I'm unhappy or unsatisfied with my life. I know that I have so much for which to be grateful - and I am.

I have struggled with depression for the past several years. Probably most of my adult life. But I've been pretty good at muddling through. It's hard to just muddle through anymore when I am responsible for 5 children, work 2 part time jobs and have other family and church responsibilities. So I've tried a couple of medications; Wellbutrin, Prozac and Lexipro. They all seemed to work initially . . . and then they didn't plus they had side effects.

I've resigned myself to the fact that I will probably always have some amount of depression and anxiety. And that's ok. I can do hard things. But I fee like I need to figure out the questions like; what's your hobby? What do you like to do in your free time? What are you passionate about? I honestly couldn't even tell you my favorite color, movie or food. I feel like I have existed for so long to take care of my family that I have completely forgotten who I am. I don't know how to figure this out, but I will. If there's one thing I do know about me it's that I am willing to take chances and I don't give up without a fight.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6394443878269747027.post-50570245051494917432015-12-17T21:33:00.000-08:002015-12-17T21:33:59.189-08:00Please describe your job dutiesAs I filled out a job application tonight I came to the last prompt regarding my current temporary job. Please describe your job duties . . . and I sat and I thought . . . how could I possibly describe in a few sentences my 'duties'?

See, for the past 4 months I have been working nearly full time as a Head Start teacher. The position I have was created purely out of desperation to provide support to the 2 lead teachers. Seasoned teachers that had been brought to this particular class to help regain control and structure. Teachers that for the first 2 weeks of school were going home every night and crying.

See, the classroom in which I am teaching is located in the center of government funded housing. The classroom is on the bottom floor of an apartment complex. There are 3 complexes on the property and our class is in the middle of it all. The neighbors smoke within feet of our playground and we often hear people shouting at one another. It is not uncommon for police helicopters to circle the complex or to see young children walking around with no shoes and old clothes.

See, some of my students live in those apartment buildings and the ones that don't live in similar ones. Or they live in old homes with no heat or a/c, or sometimes they can't get to school because their parents' car has broken down and they can't get it fixed. Or some of them live with grandparents or foster parents.

See, most of my kids have experienced trauma in their short little lives. Some were placed in foster care as toddlers because they were found abandoned and neglected to fend for themselves. One tells me that dad calls mom a B*T*H when he hits her and another says that dad throws toys at him when he doesn't clean his room fast enough. One child cried daily for weeks out of fear that his parents wouldn't pick him up because he had been left alone before. Some have stories too heartbreaking to bear.

See, the first day I walked into my class there was disorder and chaos and 2 teachers doing their best to teach and love and praise the 20 children in their care. Children begging for approval and love and safety. So, what are my job duties?

My duty is to look at these children and really see them, and love them. My duty is to create a safe haven for some of these kids that are most safe when they are at school. My duty is to look beyond the misbehavior and find out what makes each child special. My duty is to help these kids love to learn and love school so that they can fight back against a culture that teaches them nothing of value. My duty is to put a smile on my face and wrap these kids in hugs when sometimes I'd rather walk out the door and never look back. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6394443878269747027.post-18790920797372560392014-09-25T22:48:00.002-07:002014-09-25T22:48:22.361-07:00If I knewI worry sometimes about being all to everyone in my little family. And I don't even mean the cooking, crafting, party planning, taxiing, shopping, extras. I mean, how in the world am I supposed to fill this role of mother and wife to 5 . . . five people. My heart aches to be able to give myself wholly to each of them individually, but apparently the laws of physics don't work that way. I want to be able to sit and play games with Luke, read books with Seth, race cars with Joshua, snuggle my baby, and have just one uninterrupted conversation with my husband. The hours between 3-7pm can only be described as chaos in our home. It's a whirlwind of after school snacks, homework, dinner making, piano practicing, playing, dinner eating, bathing, story book reading, children wrestling, etc etc.

I can only hope that I am able to meet the most important needs and wants for each person. I hope and pray that things don't slip through the cracks, but I'm only one person. I had no idea how demanding this motherhood thing would be. No idea. I sometimes wonder if I really, really knew; would I still have done it?

If I knew that I would go months, years even without sleeping through the night. If I knew that simple requests would often be met with screaming and whining. If I knew that my body would be so exhausted from carrying/rocking a crying baby. If I knew I would spend the majority of my days secluded from any adults. If I knew that I'd spend hours preparing food only to have it most often rejected by those I'm trying to feed. If I knew I'd spend hour after hour cleaning up after other people. If I knew everything I wore would be spit up on, snotted on, and covered in who knows what else. If I really, really knew would I have done it?

If I knew that my baby would run his fingers through my hair for comfort. If I knew that my 5 year old would jump up and down with excitement to see me after school and give me the biggest bear hug imaginable. If I knew that my toddler would scrunch his face up to request a kiss. If I knew that my 7 year old would pray for me every day to have a good day as I take care of the babies by myself. If I knew that 4 little boys would snuggle next to each other on the couch with arms and hands intertwined. If I knew that my very presence meant absolutely everything to them. If I really, really knew would I have done it?

This is by far the hardest thing I have done in my life. But I can't even begin to describe how it's also the best thing I have ever done in my life. I never could have really really known anything about what I would experience, but yes, I would choose to do it all again in a heartbeat.
Our family and our hearts grew. Somehow, some way when we
didn't know if there was any more room in our hearts to give it turns out there
was always a place waiting. A place that cried out; yes, this place is just for
you! And then we wonder how we ever lived without that piece of our hearts. We
gaze at that beautiful, fresh face and just know it belongs.

Luke's class spent 6 weeks talking about Pilgrims and pioneers, so to end it they got to go on a field trip to a pioneer village. This village has gathered old buildings from across the state and brought them to one location and set up a little town. There were several homes, a school house, bank, jail, church, dress shop, printing shop and many other buildings. There were volunteers at each building to explain it's history and what happened there. It was a lot of fun and I learned a bit as well. The kids thought the school was pretty neat and couldn't believe that kids used to get paddled for misbehaving. I couldn't believe how many people lived in one room homes! There was one home the size of our family room with a loft and they had 10 children!

The boys have been so excited about Halloween this year. Nana found Ninja costumes about 6 weeks before Halloween and those costumes had a lot of use before the actual day! They were very excited to decorate and carve pumpkins.
We have been promising the boys a vacation to Disneyland for quite some time and felt this break would be the perfect time. It really was a great time to be there. For the most part the lines were very short and the crowds were very small. The last day got a little frustrating for me because the crowds and lines were bigger than the first two days, but I think I was also just tired. Disneyland is definitely a fun vacation, but not a relaxing one with three little kids! The evening that we arrived in CA we took the boys to Long Beach. They loved it! Seth proclaimed, "This is AWESOME!" I couldn't get over how beautiful it all was - especially compared AZ. The boys ran straight to the water and loved playing in the waves and sand. They could have stayed for hours. It's too bad the clean up is so horrific, but it was worth it. We then spent the next three days at Disneyland and California Adventure and took in as many rides as we possibly could! The boys' favorite ride was Star Tours and one of their favorite things was to do the Jedi Training. Another favorite was Cars Land of course. The boys begged to go back to the beach on our last day and even though I didn't want to mess with the mess I couldn't say no. We had a great time and I spent the whole next week falling asleep by 9pm! I guess it wore me out!
I knew I had felt this way before but this simply couldn't be what I thought it was because . . . well, because we had a not quite 6 month old and it wasn't the plan. I delayed getting any kind of proof for my theory because I just couldn't believe that it might be true. I was sure I was just over reacting to my 'symptoms.' But when it had been long enough that there really could be no other explanation I took the test. Immediately it showed that yes, I really was pregnant! I thought I would be scared, overwhelmed, worried . . . but from the moment I found out I was filled with peace and I know that this is right.

David took a little longer to warm up to the news. Once the shock and panic of 'How can we handle this!?!' wore off he has even said that he is excited to have a new baby in our home.

Joshua will be a young 14 months when we introduce this new little one into our family, but I'm happy to know that he will have a close sibling. I try not to worry too much about the logistics of life with two babies, but am grateful that Josh already sleeps through the night and will be walking like a pro by then, haha! I know the first year will probably be hard and lots of work, but I know we will be able to do it. I am grateful for life's unexpected blessings.
I'm 13 weeks - Due mid April - It's just as exciting to see that little baby for the first time as it was with my first baby. I really think this is a boy, but would also be happy for a girl. We will see!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6394443878269747027.post-20769143363517513592013-08-23T22:58:00.000-07:002013-08-23T22:58:41.484-07:00GuiltI sat down tonight after my last child was finally tucked in to bed. I looked around my house and started to get that sinking feeling. That ominous, ugly feeling of 'motherly guilt.' I looked around and noticed toys and books, stacked dishes, unfolded laundry, dirty bathrooms, etc etc. While browsing blogs on my phone during my first quite, alone moment of the day I started to think, 'Wow, how come I don't can food, or sew, or coupon, or teach my children some meaningful skill, or home school, or make my own baby food, or come up with awesome FHE lessons, or make great meals, or throw awesome parties, or or or." My 'motherly guilt' was starting to kick in hard! So young mother, what exactly HAVE you done all day, huh???

5am wake up call to begin my day: baby feeding, diaper changing, child comforting, breakfast making, clothing, washing, playing, story reading, homework doing, piano practicing, lunch/snack packing, house cleaning, dishes doing, school preparing, family scripture reading and praying, refereeing, lunch making, family feeding, child chauffeuring, parent volunteering, errand running, child picking upping, children snacking, niece(s) babysitting, dinner cooking, children feeding, children entertaining, bed time story reading, bed time prayers saying, bedtime putting (alone) 9pm.

I have successfully kept three young children fed, clothed, entertained, educated, and loved for another day. I didn't do it perfectly, but I did it. And they all went to bed knowing that their mother loves them - that's what I did today, so 'mother's guilt,' you can't claim me today because I am enough, I am mother!
For the most part I try to see that people usually intend no harm. And this post is not about being offended, but lately I have received some - well, the same - comment about my children that has begun to weigh heavily on my mind and heart. The question: "So, are you going to try again for a girl?"

I realize that this question is asked innocently. Of course, most women want to have a daughter. But, it comes across as, "boys just aren't quite good enough, you'd be more happy with girl." To me it means, "your children aren't enough, they're missing something - being a girl."

When someone sees me with my two young boys and my barely 6 month old baby boy and then asks, "So are you going to try again?" I wonder, why can't they be happy for the 3 healthy, sweet (yes, very energized) children that I have. I can't imagine anyone asking a mother of three young children including boys and girls if they are going to try again when their baby is only 6 months old!

We never had children with the intent of getting some specific end result. We had children to have children, not because we were 'hoping' to have a girl or a boy. Asking if we will try again implies that we failed the first 3 times! I have fallen madly in love with my baby boy and asking if I will try again discounts how much I love and adore him.

Maybe, someday in the future we will have another child or children. And I would gladly welcome a daughter. But, we will never try again because we have nothing to fix.

Big brothers teaching Josh the ways of boyhood with a sword and light saber.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6394443878269747027.post-85792559041560306692013-07-14T21:11:00.000-07:002013-07-14T21:11:03.012-07:00SomedaySomeday, I'll walk into my house and it will be straightened up and tidy with little effort.

Today, I'll recognize the clothes, dishes and toys strewn about like some kind of frat house as evidence of active, healthy children.

Someday, my counter and sink will be empty of dirty dishes.

Today, I'll recognize that those dishes represent memories of meals shared together as a family and the symbol of full bellies that I didn't have to worry about feeding.

Someday, my washer and dryer will sit silently throughout most of the day and the endless piles or laundry will disappear.

Today, I'll recognize those mounds of laundry as proof that these children run, play, get dirty and live life completely.

Someday, my bathrooms will be spotless.

Today, I'll recognize the toothpaste smudges, hand prints on the mirror, and towels (always) on the floor as signs that my children are growing and learning to care for themselves.

Someday, I will sleep through an entire night uninterrupted.

Today, I will recognize the midnight request for a lost stuffed animal, the two o'clock feeding, the 4am bed wetting and the 6 am wake up call as opportunities to get just one more glimpse at those perfect little faces and one more quite kiss.

Someday, my house will echo silence.

Today, I'll recognize the chaos and noise as sounds of childhood and happiness.

Someday can wait, because it will be here all too soon.

Today, Today is my children's day.
We finally decided that it would be best to have his tonsils and adenoids removed. He was so brave when it was time to go back without mommy or daddy. When he woke up he was so disoriented and uncomfortable. He just screamed and cried for about 30 minutes. He finally calmed down and fell back asleep and when he woke again he was much more content. I stayed with him at the hospital over night. His recovery was rough and took nearly 2 weeks before he seemed to be comfortable and not in pain. At first I couldn't tell much of a difference, but now several months later I do think it has helped. He doesn't wake much in the night anymore and besides having seasonal allergies he can breathe pretty well.
It is the first room to be completely finished and it's just the way I want it. It is very baby boy, but also classy. His room also serves as a guest room when grandparents come to visit. David's mom was such a huge help in getting this room finished and his cousin Kourtney is the master behind the quilt and block letters. I feel happy every time I go into his room and I hope he loves it too!

I feel so incredibly grateful and still can't believe how much has happened and changed in our lives this past year and especially this past month! This time last year I was at an all time low. I felt like there wasn't much else that could go wrong and didn't know how we could handle everything we'd been going through . . . and then gradually things began to improve. After living with family for nearly a year we were able to move into a nice home and have some space for just our family again. After trying longer than expected and experiencing some disappointment and heartache we found out we were pregnant. After a year of nothing happening on the job hunt, David finally started getting asked to interview for several jobs - all within the field he wanted. And then he was offered a job, and then we felt we were ready to purchase a home. And then we found a great house and I just couldn't wait any longer and we went for it and it closed quickly. And then our little boy came earlier than expected and we found ourselves incredibly busy in February! I feel like I have seen miracles unfold in our lives over this past year and feel so grateful!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6394443878269747027.post-91973093557576610702013-03-02T20:07:00.000-08:002013-03-02T20:07:12.376-08:00Family Resemblance

When Joshua was born I felt like I traveled back 6 years to when Luke was born. This new little baby resembles his older brother in so many ways. I thought it would be fun to find pictures of all three boys at the same age and see how they resemble one another. They each have their own look, but there's no denying they are brothers! I still can't believe I have 3 boys!!!

Joshua has the most hair of the three and Seth had the least (the little cutie didn't need a hair cut for almost 2 years!). Luke's face is the longest, Seth's is the roundest and Joshua is in the middle. Luke has brown eyes and Seth has blue. It will be fun to see what Joshua's turn out to be. It's amazing to me how much I love each of these children. They're so unique and different from one another and yet, they are all mine and I adore each of them.
A few from his first couple weeks. Can't get enough of him!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6394443878269747027.post-41425447539032975582013-02-20T13:58:00.000-08:002013-08-19T13:59:16.174-07:00Jaundice is a four letter wordI have a hate hate relationship with Jaundice. Both Seth and now Josh have had Jaundice beyond the minor need to sunbathe. Seth was readmitted to the hospital at 4 days old to soak under strong lights and Josh spent 2 days in the hospital before being released under lights and a week under lights at home. I am absolutely certain that Jaundice was the beginning of the end of nursing with both boys. I didn't want to do anything wrong, so I began to supplement several ounces after nursing (per Dr's 'orders'). It didn't take long for their appetites to grow faster than my supply and before long they refused to nurse. If I had it to do over again I would just nurse around the clock. After reading up more about Jaundice I've come to find that it's more common than we might think and even high levels for several weeks is not that uncommon. Anyway, live and learn!
He came completely unexpectedly and we were very unprepared. We were supposed to move and be settled in our new house for at least a week or two before he made his arrival, but apparently he had other plans!

Luke came on his due date and Seth came a week late, so I thought for sure our newest little guy would go full term. My sister was expecting just 10 days before me and both of her older children came 2 weeks early, so we thought there would be several weeks between the arrival of her baby and ours. Turns out I went early and she went just past 39 weeks, so my little guy came 3 days before her daughter.

Friday Feb 8 was a busy day. My mom treated my sister and I to a pedicure and we got the keys to our first house! That evening my mom and I took a few things over to the new house - mostly baby items because I wanted to be sure all his things were set up there so whenever we brought him home we'd be ready.

That night as I was putting Seth to bed I felt like I needed to use the restroom and sure enough when I stood up, my water broke. I think it may have broken sometime early in the morning, but when I stood up there was no doubt. I sent a message to my mom and sisters and my mom came right over. David works in the evenings, so my mom and sister came over to be at the ready whenever I needed to go. I didn't want to get to the hospital too soon because I didn't even feel like I was having contractions, but I called David and he headed home. By the time he got home and changed it had been nearly 2 hours since I felt my water break and it continued to come - though I still wasn't feeling contractions. We decided to go ahead to the hospital though because I was losing so much water. My mom, m-i-l and sister came to be with us, but when the nurse checked my progress I wasn't even dilated to a 1 and barely effaced. We sent them home and told them we'd keep them updated.

We thought for sure by morning I would have made some pretty good progress, but by around 5-6am I hadn't made any, but I was starting to feel some mild contractions. The nurse gave me a pill that was supposed to soften the cervix and I started to feel stronger contractions . . . but again by noon I still had made almost no progress. I was having steady, uncomfortable contractions, but they weren't doing enough to make labor progress. At about 1pm the OB decided it was time to start pitocin, so I went ahead and got an epidural knowing that a c-section might occur if things didn't start to progress. At 5pm the nurse checked me again and I had only dilated to a 2 and was slightly more effaced. Since we were getting close to 24 hours since my water broke (probably more if it broke earlier in the day), the OB said that if I hadn't progressed by 7pm we would need to do a c-section.

David suggested that he and his dad give me a special blessing, that labor would progress enough by 7pm that the Dr would let me deliver this baby. During the blessing I felt the love of my Savior and Heavenly Father so strongly. I knew things would be ok, no matter what. Even though I had an epidural I could tell that contractions were getting stronger and I was very hopeful that things were progressing. The nurse came to check me at about 7pm and was shocked that I was fully dilated and completely effaced! In just 2 hours I had gone from almost nothing to ready! She said she wouldn't have believed it if she hadn't checked for herself. She called the Dr and we started to get ready for this baby to come. The Dr. finally arrived at about 7:50pm and I was ready to go. After a few contractions, our little guy entered the world!

The Dr placed him on my chest and I could not stop crying. I could feel such a special presence/spirit in the room. It was as if heaven was right there with us! David and I were just both in tears. The labor was hard and very very long, but this little boy was SO worth it.
In some ways it feels like a lifetime ago and in other ways it feels like it's been so fast. We have done a lot of growing up together these past nine years. We really were very young and had stars in our eyes about what our future would be like. We'd only known each other 5 short months and yet we were so eager to start our life together! Looking back, I think we were a little crazy and I almost can't believer our parents let us do it, but I wouldn't change a thing. I think for us, it was the right way to go. We did most of our really getting to know each other after the knot was tied and there was no turning back. Thankfully, neither of us had any skeletons in the closet, but that first year (and all the years to follow!) definitely involved a lot of learning and adjusting and figuring each other and our relationship out. I think I made a pretty good choice and I think he agrees ;) We're happy with the life we've built together and we've learned to really depend on one another and trust each other. I love this guy! Maybe sometime I'll tell our story - but for now, here are pictures of our wedding day. And yes, we were married before photographers really started using digital cameras, so all of our pictures are from film!
He loves anything that goes fast: rockets, jets, motorcycles, race cars, etc. He is especially into rockets right now. In his words they are 'awesome' because they have a point at the top. What better way to celebrate his birthday than with a rocket ship party. His grandma (Omi) pulled through with a fun and creative little party.

She set up six stations for the kids to fly their rockets too. At the first station, grandpa (Pa-ki) told the kids a little story about flying in a rocket ship to have a party on the moon! At the second station the kids each had a turn to set off a little alka seltzer in a film case rocket http://www.coolscience.org/CoolScience/KidScientists/alkaseltzer.htm. They had to guess where they would land. At the third station the kids sang a little song and pretended to fly around the moon. At the fourth station the kids each had a turn to play 'Don't Eat Pete.' The fifth station was for presents and the sixth station was cake. They all had such a great time and I am so grateful for Omi and her great ideas!

We love this little ball of energy. Seth has added a whole new dimension to our family and we couldn't imagine life without him. He has such a fun sense of humor and is very clever. He is the sweetest little boy and loves to cuddle and give hugs and kisses. But, he can also be the most difficult little stink and knows how to throw a very impressive tantrum. He is very passionate and feels every thing to the core. I have no doubt he will do great things in his life!
It will introduce new terrain and unknown territory. David will begin a career in law enforcement. He will begin as a corrections officer for the sheriff's department. Which in essence means he'll be working in county jails with prisoners. The position is not what he had his heart set on, but it is an opportunity to start somewhere and move ahead toward his real goals. We will no longer be stagnant, dormant, dependent. I don't think the reality of it has has set in quite yet. There are still a lot of unknowns . . . where exactly he will work, what kind of shift he will have, how to handle the stress. But, if there is one thing I know for sure, it's that this past year and half has taught us how to get through hard things together.

We have so much to be thankful for, so much. And through this all, we have always had so much to be thankful for. Above all else we have our little family. We have each other, our sweet little boys. I am thankful that our life is moving forward, and that we've learned a lot on the way. I hope we never take it all for granted!

They've been planning for months to dress as Captain American and Batman. They got very into their roles and were very serious and fierce super heroes.
They are already planning their costumes for next year. Luke wants to be a ghost and Seth wants to be a dog. I am grateful to move on to Thanksgiving and Christmas. I love this time of year and I absolutely love that it brings cooler weather. We finally broke 80 degrees and it has been heavenly!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6394443878269747027.post-58528703769923461542012-11-11T19:31:00.000-08:002012-11-11T19:31:33.908-08:00Allergy AttackFor the past month or so we have been thinking about getting a dog. David really really wants a dog (some kind of lab or retriever) and I'm ok with it as long as he does most of the work, haha. We started looking around and going to pet shops and adoption events. A couple of weeks ago we went to an adoption event and let the boys pet a couple of dogs. About half an hour after we left I noticed that Seth's eyes looked a little irritated and gradually they became very swollen to the point that he almost couldn't open them. He seemed to be able to breathe ok, but he had been congested anyway so we couldn't tell for sure.

We immediately gave him some Benadryl and eye drops and decided that if he didn't get better soon we'd head to the ER. Luckily, the swelling started to go down and by the next morning he was better. The swelling kind of freaked Seth out and he kept saying he didn't look like himself. As it started getting better he would say, "I'm looking more like Seth."

He had an appointment with and ENT/allergist later that week and she said that often people don't have a reaction to a given allergen until after several exposures. She also said that people are usually allergic to dog saliva, not fur, so the allergy test he had a few months ago wouldn't have indicated that kind of allergy. We're hoping it was some kind of fluke like the dog rolled in something he was allergic too, but we may not ever be able to get a dog now. Just in case though, we are now the owners of two epi-pens because apparently you never know when some kind of attack might occur. We're grateful it wasn't more serious than it was!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6394443878269747027.post-51597407576128145082012-10-26T15:21:00.001-07:002012-10-26T15:21:10.069-07:00Fall Break and CampingWe decided we wanted to do something fun, low key and inexpensive over Luke's fall break. We'd heard that about an hour and a half north of us there were some great places to go camping so we decided 3 days and 2 night would be just right. David ended up getting really sick the evening before we were supposed to leave. We already had everything packed and several things in the car ready to go the next morning. Instead we took him to the Dr and she prescribed antibiotics for strep throat.

The day were were supposed to go the boys were sad and disappointed and I didn't want to just hang out at home like usual, so I took them to Toys R Us to play and pick a toy and then I took them to Golfland to mini golf and play arcade games. They had a fun time, but next time I'm not paying for myself to golf. I ended up helping them and chasing their balls the whole time! That evening David started to feel a little better so we decided if he was ok enough we'd still try to go camping (almost everything was still packed).

The next morning he was feeling pretty good so we started to gather last
minute items and finish packing the car. By 11am we were ready to go
and started driving north. It was so neat to watch the landscape change
with each mile as the altitude rose. We started with the usual desert -
cactus, shrubs, lots of dirt, and then it changed into a ton of huge
saguaro cactus and then more greenery with small pancake cactus and then
lots of tall pine and oak trees. When we stepped out of the car in
Payson we couldn't believe how nice and woodsy it smelled. It also
helped that it was 10-15 degrees cooler than it's been in Mesa.

We hauled out all our gear and David and the boys set up the tent.
Within half an hour of arriving Seth tripped and hit his cheek on a
large rock. He immediately said he wanted to go home, but we were able
to distract him with a Mater movie (thank goodness for DVD players!).
Once he was recovered we set out on a 'nature walk' and explored around
our campground. It was so beautiful! The leaves on many of the trees
were changing color and we were able to show the boys was 'Fall'
actually looks like! The boys were convinced there were bears nearby and
were on constant lookout.

When we got back from our
'hike' David started a fire so we could start cooking dinner. The boys
were so excited and loved helping set it up and loved throwing little
pieces of wood into the fire. We made tin foil dinners and I was
surprised that the boys actually devoured them. I've always loved
campfire food and I guess they do too! We were all so excited for
s'mores, but someone dropped the ball and completely forgot graham
crackers and marshmallows. They were on the kitchen counter and I
totally spaced it! I think I was more disappointed than anyone. It
turned out ok though because we also had popcorn and hot chocolate.
By about 8pm we were ready for bed, so we cleaned up and settled for
the night. Mom also spaced it and forgot pull ups for Seth and the boys
tooth brushes. They thought it was so funny that I'd been so forgetful!
Luckily, Seth did really well during the night and didn't have any
accidents! It got really cold in the middle of the night (somewhere in
the 40s), but we have very warm sleeping bags and we were all wearing
sweat shirts as well. I wasn't about to sleep on the ground at 5+ months
pregnant so I slept on an air mattress and was actually quite
comfortable.

In the morning we cooked bacon, eggs and
hot chocolate and just enjoyed the cool weather. As it warmed up we
started to clean up and pack up and then went on another nice nature
walk and then headed home. We ended up only being there for one night
and two half days (about 24 hours all together) and that was actually
the perfect amount of time. The original plan might have gotten a bit
long, but we had so much fun and really enjoyed this little outing.
Since I'd spaced it on the s'mores we made some at home later in the
evening. Seth ended up not wanting his, so I just had to eat an extra
one ;)Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6394443878269747027.post-50284746743913297572012-10-23T20:21:00.001-07:002012-10-23T20:21:46.797-07:00Little All StarLuke has been anxious to try out all the different sports and since he did soccer in the spring he wanted to try baseball this fall (if that's what you can call 'the season' here when it's still in the 90's most of the time!). He's been great at hitting the ball in the past, but we've only really played with wiffle balls and plastic bats. The metal bat seems a bit heavy for him, so he's having a hard time swinging, but he seems to be getting more confident and getting the hang of it. It's kind of a complicated game but with each practice he seems to pick up the rules a bit. They've had two games and it has been a lot of fun to watch those cute kids learning to play. He has a great little team and a very nice coach and we're looking forward to a fun season.
